A barber who reaches for the clippers before asking what you want, or who does not look at your hairline and how your hair grows, is cutting the same head all day. Two minutes of conversation is the difference between a cut that suits you and one that suited the last man.

Look at the fade on somebody else's head
Walk in and look at the customer being finished. No line where the grades change, a neckline that is a shape rather than an accident, sideburns level with each other. That tells you more than any wall of photographs, because the photographs are always the best cut of the year.

How long is the appointment
A skin fade properly blended and cleaned up takes about forty minutes. If a shop is turning them round in fifteen, something is being skipped. Ours are booked at forty for that reason, and a crew cut at twenty because that is genuinely all it needs.

Chairs and waiting
A shop with one chair and a queue means an hour of your Saturday. Six chairs running at once is the reason we can take walk-ins on a Saturday afternoon without you standing on the pavement.

Whether they will talk you out of something
The best sign in a barbershop is a barber saying no. A skin fade on fine hair, or a very short crop on a head with a strong crown, will not look like the photo. A shop that takes your money anyway is not looking after you.

We are a busy traditional shop. Six chairs, first free chair takes you, and prices that have barely moved in a postcode where that is unusual. That suits most men and it does not suit everyone, which is worth saying out loud.
What locals actually go on
Review volume over time beats a high average with twelve reviews. A shop with hundreds of reviews collected over years has been consistent through several changes of staff, which is the thing you are actually buying.
Word of mouth on Harrow Road still does most of the work. Ask the man leaving the chair in front of you. He has no reason to lie to you.
Reddit is thinner than people expect for W9. Threads about London barbers concentrate on Soho, Shoreditch and the City, so searching for W9 recommendations there tends to return other parts of London. Google reviews for Harrow Road and Elgin Avenue shops will tell you more.
Photographs are the least useful signal. Every shop posts its best fade of the year. Look at the head of whoever is in the chair when you walk past instead.

- Look at the back of the head of the man in the chair, not at the photos on the wall. A good fade has no step or line where one clipper grade stops and the next starts, and the hairline at the neck is a deliberate shape rather than wherever the hair happened to stop growing. Ask to see the back of your own head in the hand mirror before you pay.
