The Mod Cut Hairstyle Making a Comeback

A mod cut hairstyle is a short, straight-edged fringe worn down over the forehead, sitting above sides kept close with scissors or a low guard rather than taken to skin. The top carries enough weight that the fringe holds its own shape without gel. It is shorter and sharper than the curtains that have filled a lot of chairs the last couple of years, and that is exactly why men are asking for it now: the same clean, slightly vintage look, without four inches of hair to grow through first.

What a mod cut hairstyle actually is

The fringe is the whole cut. It gets cut with a clean, level edge, either dead straight across or with a soft round to it, sitting low enough to touch the eyebrows. Everywhere else stays out of the way: sides close enough that the fringe reads as the only thing happening, a neckline squared off rather than tapered into nothing.

The name comes from 1960s British mod style, the parka-and-scooter look from the same era as Quadrophenia, and it never really left the barbering trade. It has come back round because it answers the same brief as curtains, a bit of vintage shape rather than a fade, without the growing-out phase curtains demand first.

If what you pictured was the fringe pushed up and forward rather than combed down flat, that is closer to a French crop, a different cut built on the same short sides.

You need length to start it properly. Two to three inches on top is roughly the minimum for the fringe to have enough weight to sit down rather than curl up at the ends, so if you are coming from anything short it means growing through a stage first. Book in for a scissor tidy at the sides while you get there rather than a full cut, so the shape holds and the top keeps growing clean.

Mod cut vs curtains

They solve the same problem in different ways. Curtains are centre parted and swept away from the face in two wings, and they need four to six inches of length on top before they hang properly, which usually means three or four months growing through an in-between stage that never quite has a shape of its own. Straight and loose wavy hair takes to a mod cut with almost no fuss. The fringe drops flat under its own weight and a small amount of cream is enough to hold the edge down. Fine hair works too, provided there is enough length on top, a short fringe on thin hair just reads as a short haircut with a line in it.

Tight curl is the one hair type that argues with this cut. Curl lifts the fringe instead of letting it lie flat, so the straight edge across the forehead never quite settles, however much product goes on it. If that is you, the cuts that actually work with curly hair are a better starting point than trying to force this one.

What to ask for in the chair

Say the fringe length first: level with the eyebrows is the classic length, a centimetre above them if you want it to move less through the day. Then the sides: a 2 or a 3 with the clippers, or scissor tapered if you want it softer than a guard number gives you. Do not ask for a fade underneath this fringe. A hard fade competes with a soft, straight line up top, and the cut ends up looking like two different haircuts stitched together.

It is priced as an ordinary haircut, not as a style. A haircut is £15 for 30 minutes, which covers the scissor work on top and the tidy at the sides. If you want the sides taken shorter with a guard and blended rather than scissor tapered, that still fits inside the same 30 minutes.

Keeping it sharp

The fringe is what sends men back. At four weeks it starts sitting on the eyebrows instead of above them, and by five it is in your eyes on a breezy day. The sides last a little longer since there is no fade line to protect, just length to keep off the ears and collar.

At home it is quick. Comb it down while it is still slightly damp rather than fully dry, work a small amount of light cream through the fringe only, and let it set as it finishes drying rather than reaching for a hairdryer. A hairdryer lifts the ends and it stops looking like the cut you left the chair with.

Bring a photo if you have one, but say the two numbers out loud as well, the fringe length and the guard on the sides. A barber working from a photo alone is guessing at proportions a phone screen does not show properly, and a centimetre either way changes how this one sits.
