Movember Moustache Styles: A 30-Day Plan

Movember moustache styles are decided by one rule more than anything else: you start clean shaven on 1 November and you have thirty days. That takes most of what a search will show you straight off the table. A horseshoe or a waxed English wants roughly eight weeks before there is enough length to shape, so you will not have one by the 30th. What thirty days does give you is a full, honest lip line, and it is worth planning rather than drifting into.

The rule that decides the style for you

Movember has one rule that matters for your face. Everybody starts clean shaven on 1 November, then grows and grooms a moustache for the month. Moustache only: no beard, no goatee, and no head start in October. That last one is the rule men break most often and it is the one that defeats the point of the thing.

The money raised goes to men's health, mostly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. We are not running a collection tin on the counter, so take what follows as what it is, which is advice about the growing from people who shave men for a living.

Movember moustache styles that fit inside thirty days

Facial hair grows somewhere around a centimetre a month, and for most men the top lip fills in slower than the jaw does. So on 30 November you are working with about a centimetre, and less than that if you are fair or if your growth comes in thin under the nose.

That length will carry a natural full lip, left alone apart from the edges. It is the default and it is where most men finish the month, and there is nothing wrong with it. It will carry a chevron if your growth is even right the way across, sitting straight above the lip with no gap at the corners. It will carry a pencil, which needs less length than any other shape and is the one to pick if your growth is patchy, since a narrow line does not put the thin spots either side of it on display.

It will not carry a horseshoe, an English, or anything you intend to wax. Those need length to drop past the mouth or to hold a curl, and a month has not got it. Start one in Movember if you like, but it is late December before it is ready to shape. So the honest planning question is not which style you want. It is whether your top lip comes in evenly. Even growth means you have a choice at the end of the month. Patchy growth means the pencil or the natural line, and knowing that on 1 November saves you three weeks of hoping.

What the month actually looks like

Week one. It looks like you have forgotten to shave, because that is exactly what it is. Nothing to trim, nothing to shape, nothing to do. The itch along the lip line peaks around day four or five and then settles.

Week two. The colour evens out and you get the first sense of the shape underneath. This is when most men pick up the scissors, and it is the week that ruins more Movember moustaches than any other. Leave it. You can clean your cheeks and your neck if you need to look tidy at work, since neither is part of the moustache.

Week three. Now there is something to work with. Edges only: the hairs crossing down over the lip, and anything wandering out towards the cheek. The length stays untouched. If you are tidying it yourself, use scissors rather than clippers and take your time, because there is nowhere to hide a mistake on a strip of hair that size. If you would rather it was done for you, this is the week to come in, and a moustache trim is £5 in a ten minute slot.

Week four. It is a moustache. The shape it has landed in is broadly what you have, and the only question left is whether it sees December.

Book the shave, do not chance it

You need to be clean on the morning of the 1st, and 31 October 2026 falls on a Saturday. Saturday is the busiest day of our week, so a walk-in that afternoon is the version of this that costs you an hour on a bench. Book the slot instead.

A clean shave here is £11 in a twenty minute slot, taken down with a straight edge and finished with hot towels. A fair number of men have the haircut at the same time, which is £15 in a thirty minute slot, so the pair comes to £26 and about an hour. If you leave it too late on the Saturday, we are open 10:00am to 6:30pm on Sunday 1 November, and shaving on the morning itself still counts as a clean start.

One thing worth saying to whoever is holding the razor: tell him you are going into Movember. It changes nothing about the shave, but it means the lip gets the same attention as the jaw rather than a quick pass on the way past, and you start the thirty days genuinely level.

Then decide properly on 1 December

On 1 December you have three options and only one of them needs any thought. Take it off, keep it exactly as it is, or commit to the shape it has been growing towards since week three.

If it is the third, do not do it yourself at speed before work. A month of growth is the slow part of any moustache and it takes about ten minutes to undo with the wrong pair of scissors. The same restraint that got you through week two is the thing that gets you a shape worth keeping.

And when you do come in, say what you want it to become rather than asking for a tidy. "Keep the width, square the corners, take nothing off the length" is an instruction a barber can follow. "Just neaten it up" is how thirty days quietly disappears.
